“Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” — C.G. Jung
Kalen Deremo, MA, LPCC
Growing up on a farm in southern Colorado I experienced firsthand the solace and majesty of Mother Nature in my formative years. As I matured, this guiding light followed me throughout my long, circuitous journey in life. No matter what job I undertook, no matter where I called home, I always found myself gravitating towards the sensations and experiences I had while in intimate connection with the natural world.
When it finally came time to select a career I asked how I could maintain such profound relationship with nature while helping others gain access to this almighty healing source as well. This question guided me home to Colorado where I received a master’s degree in counseling psychology with an emphasis in wilderness therapy, landing my dream job as family therapist at the legendary Open Sky Wilderness Therapy in the process.
Unfortunately after a near two-decade run of some of the most life-changing therapeutic work in the country, Open Sky officially shut its doors in February of 2024 and with it an entire era of wilderness therapy came to a close.

The birth of True Wild
Though the traditional wilderness therapy models centered around teen treatment are increasingly obsolete, the epidemic of sedentary lifestyles, chronic disease, mental health conditions and general disconnection from the planet continues to surge across the country. Enter, True Wild.
Why the name True Wild? The word “true” is thought to have roots dating back to the ancient Sanskrit word for tree, “dru,” before finding its way to Old English where “treu” was defined as faithful, trustworthy, honest and steady. Similarly, “wild” stems from numerous Germanic words for forest and woodlands, yet eventually took on the more contemporary definition we know today from Old English, as in uncultivated, undomesticated, untamed and uncontrolled.
When combined in a modern therapeutic context, these two words symbolize an authentic, grounded and intuitive version of ourselves we are constantly striving to make contact with. At True Wild Therapy we do this by coming into deeper relationship with Earth as our palette utilizing heartfelt communication, personal reflection, natural movement, group connection and creative self expression.
